Semax is a heptapeptide derived from the ACTH/MSH family, developed as a synthetic analog of the ACTH fragment 4 to 10. It has been extensively studied in Russian research for its neuroprotective properties and its ability to enhance cognitive function in various animal models.

Unlike full-length ACTH, Semax does not affect adrenal cortex function, allowing researchers to study its neurotrophic effects in isolation. It has shown interesting effects on BDNF levels, dopamine and serotonin metabolism, and gene expression patterns in brain tissue.
